What is Leadership?
TWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT TO
CONSIDER:
The First School of Thought:
The Greek Philosophy
Leadership is a product of Five (5) things
GREEK PHILOSOPHY:
(1) Birth Trait Theory: “Leaders are born, not
made”
(2) Leadership by Providence
(3) Leadership Is the Result of a Charismatic
Personality
(4) Leadership Is the Product of a Forceful
Personality
(5) Leadership Is the Result of Special Training
The Second School of Thought:
The Location Philosophy
The history of a location determines the
interpretation giving to concepts in that
location
LOCATION PHILOSOPHY:
TWO EVENTS THAT MARK THE
HISTORY OF WEST AFRICA:
1.Slave Trade
2. Colonialism
SLAVE TRADE: People Taken
The strong people who were
the economic strength of the
West African axis
SLAVE TRADE: People Left Behind
1. Physically challenged people
2. Weak and lazy people
3. Those who could hide creatively from their
captors
4. Children too small to be taken away
5. The wicked Kings and their Cohorts
SLAVE TRADE: Mindset of the
People After Slave Trade
Distrust, Mistrust, Suspicion, Greed,
Corruption, Wickedness,
Oppression, Hypocrisy, Dishonesty,
Lies, etc.
If the Greeks and our location
cant give us the best definition
of leadership,
so WHAT THEN
IS LEADERSHIP?
SCHOLARLY DEFINITIONS:
The activity of leading a group of people or an
organization or the ability to do this.
---Business Dictionary
Leadership is the ability to evaluate and or
forecast a long term plan or policy and
influence the followers towards the
achievement of the said strategy.
---Adeoye Mayowa: A Leadership Manager
in Nigeria (2009)
SCHOLARLY DEFINITIONS:
Leadership is a process of giving purpose
(meaningful direction) to collective effort, and
causing willing effort to be expended to achieve
purpose.”
--- Jacobs & Jaques (1990, p.281)
“Leadership is a process whereby an individual
influences a group of individuals to achieve a
common goal.“
--- Northouse (2004, p 3)
ONE OF THE BEST DEFINITION:
"Leadership is influence - nothing more,
nothing less."
--- John Maxwell, 1998
MY DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP:
“Leadership is the ability to Influence the
thoughts, words and actions of others by
inspiring them through problem solving
Visions, Service and Values”.
---Joshua Ademuwagun (2014)
INSPIRATION IS BASED ON:
 Vision
 Service
 Values
Leadership is vision based on
values expressed through
service.
VISION:
“Vision is the ability to See the solution to
the problems of people”
--- Joshua Ademuwagun (2014)
VALUES:
Values are our fundamental beliefs.
They are the principles we use to define
that which is right, good and just.
Values provide guidance as we determine
the right versus the wrong, the good versus
the bad. They are our standards.
Some examples of Values to
have:
Integrity
Honesty
Love
Commitment
Diligence
Candor
Empathy
Etc.
SERVICE:
Service is taking the necessary
actions to solve the problems of
people.
Service is the practical side of vision
and values
