ICT in TVET:
ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES OF
AUCHI POLYTECHNIC, AUCHI, NIGERIA.
Presented by
ODUNTAN EVELYN BOSEDE (MRS)
At
The 6th International Conference on
ICT for Development, Education
and Training (E-Learning Africa)
in
Milimani City Conference Centre,
Da es Salaam, Tanzania,
May 25 – 27, 2011
INTRODUCTION
The Polytechnic is established primarily to
provide for studies, training and development
of techniques in applied sciences, information
and communication technology, engineering,
art and business as well as in other spheres
of learning, cultural development and the
inculcation of good character which are
integral parts of education and training.
ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE POLYTECHNIC
As an Organization
 A committee on Flexible and Blended
learning has been formed to look into
attainment of the set goals of flexible
and blended learning.
 Establishment of an entrepreneurship
centre/village for acquisition of
entrepreneurial skills by our students
and non-students
Strategically:


We have designed a syllabi of two
programmes- Fashion Design & clothing
technology and basic ICT competencies- to
make them amenable to flexible
teaching/learning, bearing in mind the
peculiarities of our environment and
characteristics of our target beneficiaries.
Our committee has held the first of a series
of interactive meetings with members of the
local association of tailors to find out
particular fashion and design interests (and
challenges) they will like to address in a
learning package.
Technically:

Deployment of Internet hotspots around the
campus which has a wide coverage to enable
staff and students even at the comfort of
their homes/hostels access the web and
remain communicated with each other 24/7.

We presently have two functional elearning
centres in the campus and two more elearning centres are being constructed at
different locations in the school campus to
help facilitate ICT mediated teaching and
learning. Pictures of these are attached.

Teaching Staff:



Practical method of teaching entrepreneurial
courses by inviting experts from all spheres of
life for practical demonstration sessions.
Presently 3 staff of the polytechnic are
undergone a training course in Flexible
Teaching and Learning in TVET which is a
course offered by COL.
More trained facilitators/teachers are being
exposed to the modern trend of flexibility in
teaching and learning through ICT workshops.
ICT WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS IN THE
SECONDARY AND PRIMARY SECTION OF THE
POLYTECHNIC.
CHALLENGES
Funding – major challenge
 Retraining of human resources – teachers
and technical staff
 Unavailability of adequate facilities to cope
with the teaming population.
 Regular and prompt maintenance of the
available facilities
 Effect of government policies on plans
 Lack of sufficient time to design, develop and
implement a strategy before change of
office/officers occurs

CHALLENGES CONT’D
Lack of relevant/appropriate learning
resources/materials
 Acceptance of the new system by
formal/informal sector is a challenge
because people hardly embrace change,
unless they cannot do without it.
 Competence in ICT usage
 Developing good digital content
 Steady and stable electricity

CONCLUSION/RECOMENDATION
These challenges can however be overcome
when help comes from attending such
workshops as this and some other means like
support from NGOs and the government. This
will help us achieve more as regards to ICT and
FSD. Well, if these can be overcome, with time,
Auchi Polytechnic will become a centre of
excellence in flexible skills development in Africa
and eventually the world.
My recommendation is that the training on FSD
be extended to all teachers in various
polytechnics/technical colleges, etc as time goes
on.
THANK YOU
