Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI)
The Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) defines the functional
interface that applications can use to create, retrieve, update and
delete data elements from the Cloud. As part of this interface, the
client can discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and
use this interface to manage containers and the data that is placed in
them. In addition, metadata can be set on containers and their
contained data elements through this interface.

Green Storage
Green Storage Activities
Green Storage Power Efficiency Measurement Specification
Identifies metrics by which energy consumption and efficiency of
storage networking products can be measured for the purposes of
new product development, end-user customer evaluation, and
regulatory standards development.
EPA Energy Star Program
SNIA is actively engaged with the EPA ENERGY STAR Program on
development of an ENERGY STAR Data Center Storage Specification.
SNIA Emerald Program
GSI (Green Storage Initiative) has developed a test methodology and
metric for measuring the power used by storage systems.
Solid State Storage
Solid State Storage Activities
Solid State Storage Performance Test Specification
The SNIA has developed methods which enable manufacturers to set,
and customers to compare, the performance specifications of Solid
State Storage devices, which are evolving with the state of the
technology. These specifications define a set of device level tests and
methodologies which enable comparative testing of Solid State Storage
devices for Enterprise and Client systems.
Storage Management
Storage Management Initiative
Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S)
SMI-S 1.6.0 has been published
http://www.snia.org/smis
SMI-S 1.5.0 has gone to ISO to become the next International version
Work on SMI-S 1.6 Addenda are in progress
Work on SMI-S 2.0 has begun
Supports the use of any WBEM protocol
SMI-S and DMTF
SMI-S provides management of storage using WBEM and CIM Schema
E.g., SMI-S 1.5.0 was based on CIM 2.23 and SMI-S 1.6.0 is based on CIM 2.29
SMI-S uses or specializes a number of DMTF Profiles
E.g., PRP, Base Server, Fan, Power Supply, Indications, etc
A number of DMTF Profiles reference SMI-S Profiles
E.g., Disk Drive Diagnostics, System Virtualization, etc.
SMI-S Implementation Support
SMI-Lab Program
Provides a lab environment and a community that supports SMI-S
implementation bring-up and interoperability testing
Members are encouraged to install and maintain SMI-S enabled
equipment in SMI-Lab, for local use and for remote use via VPN
Plugfest events are held several times a year to allow vendors to
collaborate on interoperability issues in a lab environment
Conformance Test Program (CTP)
Provides an impartial validation that an SMI-S implementation passes
an established set of tests for an identified set of SMI-S profiles
Passing implementations are certified and listed on the public web site
http://www.snia.org/ctp
Testing for up to SMI-S 1.5 functionality is now available

New Technical Work Groups
Linear Tape File System (LTFS) TWG
The Linear Tape File System Technical Work Group works on the
development of SNIA Architecture related to the on-tape format for
LTFS.
Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) Programming TWG
The NVM Programming TWG was created for the purpose of
accelerating availability of software enabling NVM (Non–Volatile
Memory) hardware. The TWG creates specifications which provide
guidance to operating system, device driver, and application
developers. These specifications are vendor agnostic and support all
the NVM technologies of member companies.

Technical White Paper Published
Architectural Model for Data Integrity v1.0
This document describes a model for how data integrity can be
protected between an Application client and a storage device. If all
nodes in an implementation follow this model then there will be endto-end data protection for the following class of data integrity errors:
silent data corruption, wrong address on device and buffer corruption.

New Public Review Releases
DRAFT CDMI Extensions and Profiles
The Cloud Storage TWG is adding new functionality to CDMI by publishing individual
extensions the CDMI standard. These can be implemented as needed in conjunction with a
CDMI implementation to add new functionality before the next release of CDMI. As
implementation experience is gained and interoperable implementations are tested, these
extensions will be made part of the next release of CDMI. In addition the TWG is publishing
profiles of CDMI that scope it down to specific use cases based on different types of clouds.

PCIe SSD Taskforce
PCIe SSD Taskforce
Charter
Provide guidance to the marketplace on PCIe SSDs. This can take the form of
educational materials, best practices documents and SNIA standards.
Coordinate with other industry organizations involved in PCIe SSD-related
activities. Stay consistent with the messaging developed by these organizations and
do not reinvent materials, when such materials already exist and are accessible.
The Taskforce is structured as an open industry forum for the initial 90 days of
existence, and thereafter as a SSSI committee. No NDA is required and thus no
confidential information should be shared amongst the members of the taskforce.
Taskforce is investigating potential areas of new technical work

Storage Developer Conference 2012
Save the Date!
Conference Dates: September 17-20, 2012
Conference Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Santa Clara, CA
Now in its ninth year, and again expected to draw more than 300 developers
and engineers, the Storage Developer Conference (SDC) is the only event
created by storage developers for storage developers.
SDC provides the information and know-how to further advance solutions
with features that shorten time to market for a developed solution, increase
acceptability and interoperability in production environments, and help
participants understand where storage technologies are heading. In addition,
plans are being finalized for another successful CIFS/SMB/2/3 Plugfest and
Cloud Plugfest.
