ORDER IN THE SOUTH AND THE EAST MEDITERRANEAN
REGION

Italian Presidency of the Council (1/7/2014 – 31/12/2014): Mediterranean area should be a key priority
for the EU
• ‚Applied research on long-term socio‐economic challenges in the Euro‐Mediterranean should remain important in
Horizon 2020 mainly on the topics of: energy and climate change mitigation; climate change adaptation with a
focus on water efficiency and agriculture, waste management and food security’ - External advice and
societal engagement: Towards the 2016 and 2017 work programme of "Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective
Societies" of Horizon 2020
• (The 2016 and 2017 work programme of Societal Challenge 6 will have a budget of more than €300
million.)

CALL-INT-8-2015: THE EUROPEAN UNION AND THE
EASTERN PARTNERSHIP
• Specific challenge: reinforced relationships with EaP countries (Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan,
Georgia); design policies towards this region
• Scope:
• research should include stock-taking of existing relations between EU and each of these countries, as well as between the EaP
countries
• Specific attention should be paid to Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine
• examine how scientific cooperation and the mobility of the researchers increase understanding between EU actors and the countries
of this region

Addressing societal challenges
Role of Russia and Turkey should be taken into account
Contrasting EU approaches toward the region with those of third countries (USA and China) could equally be of interest
participating partners from the EaP countries is strongly encouraged

research should include stock-taking of existing relations between EU and each of these countries, as well as
between the countries on the Balkans
•

key issues: socio-economic development, identity politics, ethnic conflicts, gender equality, migration
role of the macro-regional strategies (Danube RS), and other powers should be analysed
participating partners from the Balkans is strongly encouraged
