Technology Systems:
Core Technologies
Technology System
A technology system is a group of resources
(subsystems) working together to solve problems
and extend human capabilities.
In your notes, list the:
• problem a jet ski solves.
•The subsystems that work
together in a jet ski.
Core Technologies
• The core
technologies are the
“building blocks” of all
technology systems.
Core Technologies
• Mechanical
• Structural
• Electrical
• Electronic
• Fluid
• Optical
• Thermal
• Biotechnology
• Materials
Mechanical Technology
• Technology of putting together mechanical
parts to produce, control and transmit
motion.
Structural Technology
• Technology of putting mechanical parts
and materials together to create supports,
containers, shelters, connectors and
functional shapes.
Electrical Technology
• Technology of producing, storing,
controlling, transmitting and getting work
from electrical energy.
Electronic Technology
• Technology of using small amounts of
electricity for controlling; detecting; and
information collecting, storing, retrieving,
processing and communicating.
Fluid Technology
• Technology of using fluid, either gas
(pneumatics) or liquid (hydraulic) to apply
force or to transport.
Optical Technology
• Technology of producing light; using light
for information collection, storage,
retrieval, process and communication; and
using light to do work.
Thermal Technology
• Technology of producing, storing,
controlling, transmitting and getting work
from heat energy.
Biotechnology
• Technology of using, adapting, and
altering organisms and biological
processes for a desired outcome.
Materials Technology
• Technology of producing, altering, and
combining materials.
With a Partner
• Turn to your table partner and share which
core technology you find most interesting
and why.
• With the help of your partner, indicate in
your notes one job that might be found
under each core technology.
Our Focus
• For the Sea Perch Project we will be
focusing on three of the nine core
technologies and how they integrate to
create the Sea Perch.
• Structural
• Mechanical
• Electrical
