Driver Distraction
 According to a NHTSA / Virginia Tech
Transportation Institute (VTTI) study, 80% of
crashes and 65% of near-crashes are due to driver
distraction.
 Over 3,300 people were killed and 387,000 injured
in distracted driving accidents in 2011 in the USA.
 Major distractions leading to crashes are:
– Cell phone use
– Texting
– Reaching for an object inside the vehicle
– Looking at something outside the vehicle
– Reading
– Applying makeup
 DAS can help improve safety for
distracted drivers and those around
them – e.g. Lane Keep Assist and
Automatic Emergency Braking for cars
& pedestrians
