Agenda
4. CHC White Papers Update – Greg Walker (CABA)
4.1 Convergence of the Connected Home and Car, Keith Robinson, Compass
Intelligence
Compass Intelligence is proposing a Convergence of the Connected Home and Car
white paper research. These two markets are on a collision course for
convergence and each market brings an interesting value-proposition to the table.
It is believed that some of the offerings that the automotive industry brings to the
table such as telematics products like OnStar, would be of great value to home
automation companies. There are products and services on both sides of the
market spectrum that can help catapult key market participants into a leadership
position in the fast evolving market.
Working Group:
Lavanya Rammohan, Compass Intelligence
Valerie Foster, Compass Intelligence

Examples of buildings: Renewable House
• Hemcrete, a mix of hemp and lime, was
used in the timber frame walls.
• The timber and Hemcrete structure, and
FSC certified timber windows, deliver low Uvalues and good airtightness.
• Thermafleece insulation, made from British
sheep's wool, was also used - also keeps
the carbon footprint down.
• Renewable materials in the paint and
furnishings provide a comfortable
environment. A new bio-renewable carpet

About UPnP Forum
• Develops consensus-driven Internet Protocol (IP) technical
specifications to enable device-to-device interoperability
through Discovery and Control
• Certifies implementations conforming to these standards
• Member companies participate and develop extensions to the
UPnP Device Architecture (UDA), which defines how to use IP
to communicate between devices, and Device Control Protocols
(DCPs), which are services between devices
• Members of UPnP Forum include market leaders in computing,
printing and networking, consumer electronics, home
appliances, automation, control and security, and mobile
products
UPnP Forum Goals
• In an open environment, develop standards for
interoperable device services using common
technologies: TCP/IP, SOAP and XML
• Balance protection of member investment in
technology with confidence in ability to implement
under royalty-free terms
• Encourage rapid and broad industry deployment of
compliant devices

UPnP Technology Interactions
UPnP+
•
Extends UPnP’s leadership in standards-based machine-tomachine (M2M) communications by cloud-enabling all existing
UPnP specifications (and existing devices)—an approach of
adapt & adopt, not re-invent
•
Incorporates newest UPnP specifications, including audio/video,
energy management, and security; fully integrates IPv6 while
offering seamless backwards compatibility for IPv4
•
Enables device organization by “rooms”, providing simple-yetpowerful consumer configuration and personalization
capabilities—share your living room across town or across the
globe, simply and securely
•
Expands protocol bridging capabilities, including broader
support for sensors, health monitoring, and energy management
•
Facilitates the always-connected lifestyle while driving UPnP
devices to the core of the Internet of Things
UPnP Cloud
• UPnP Cloud is an Annex to the UPnP UDA much like
IPv6. It is referred to as UDA Cloud Annex or UCA.
• UCA defines a profile of XMPP that can be added as
a “wrapper” to a UPnP device or control point,
making them a UPnP Cloud Capable Device (UCCD)
or Control Point (UCC-CP) respectively. It allows
them to connect to other devices and control points
via an XMPP server (UPnP Cloud Server or UCS).
• In essence, this allows all DCPs to be leveraged to
the Cloud.
UPnP Internet of Things (IoT)
• New activity in UPnP Forum!
• UPnP IoT is collecting use cases, technical
requirements and developing an architecture to meet
IoT requirements consistent with the UPnP ecosystem.
• The Architecture requirements at a basic level:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Top level connectivity is IP
Define a simple way to accommodate new devices
Be able to integrate diverse networks (ZigBee, Zwave, ANT …)
Support devices in diverse locations
Provide reliable security
Curate IoT device interfaces and make them easily definable
and accessible.
UPnP Internet of Things Assets
• UPnP Device Architecture
• Discovery, security, management, control, eventing, IPv6, etc.
• DCPs
• Lights/switches, thermostat, blinds, Digital Security Cameras, A/V
• SensorManagement
• DCPs condensed to XML structure
• Bridging to other protocols
• Actuator control
• Cloud Annex
• Cloud architecture based on XMPP
Other UPnP Activities
• Multi-Screen
• DCPs recently completed and under member review
• Enables automatic discovery of multi-screen capable services,
and coordinate and synchronize between applications on any
number of screens
• Man-to-Device Interaction
• Architecture requirements being defined
• Enables gesture-recognizing utilities, voice-recognizing utilities
and wearable utilities as control points to interact with UPnP
Services.
Summary
• Open standards are essential to the ecosystem and
consumers
• UPnP Forum’s open specifications are the basis for and
continue to lead standardization of device discovery and
control interfaces
• Evolution of the technology provides innovation while
maintaining backward compatibility with existing products
• UPnP is very widely deployed (billion+ devices!)
• UPnP+ will allow control for mobile, cloud, and IPv6
• Lots of exciting work being done!
