The need is great
• Every day, more than 22,000 children under the age of 5 die —
most from preventable causes such as malaria, diarrhea, measles,
and pneumonia [UNICEF, 2010]
• Hunger is linked to nearly one-third of all child deaths worldwide
[UNICEF, 2010]
• About 67 million of the world’s children of primary
school age are not enrolled in school [UNESCO, 2011]
• Some 1 billion children are severely deprived of at least
one of the essential goods and services they require to
survive and develop [UNICEF, 2009]
