Attendance at SES
Attendance is a priority at SES. This school year we will work closely with Community Mediation Upper
Shore as a truancy diversion program. This program seeks ways to improve attendance for parents whose
children have poor attendance records. We will use this process as a way to improve student attendance.
During a mediation process the parents and students have the chance to explain extenuating
circumstances for absences.
The goal is to reach an agreement that will help the students improve their attendance record.
Electronic Devices
I. Purpose: The Queen Anne’s County Board of Education acknowledges that portable communication
devices may add to the well-being of students, however the Board also recognizes the possibility that
these devices may distract or disrupt the education environment. Therefore limited use of portable
communication devices will be permitted but must strictly follow the prescribed guidelines.
Elementary school students are not permitted to possess or use portable communication devices while on
Queen Anne’s County Public School property or while attending any elementary school activities. School
office phones are available for those students who need to contact parents. This means students may not
have cell phones or any other communication devices on the school grounds or on the buses. Because
they distract from our studies and are frequently “lost”, students are discouraged from bringing electronic
devices to school. Neither the school nor the teachers are responsible for safeguarding expensive devices
that students decide to bring to school. Students may not bring a device to school that has internet
access unless prior approval by the principal. S.E.S. will enforce this policy in order to protect privacy
and prevent cyber bullying as well as to monitor appropriate usage. An Acceptable Use Policy will be
sent home in the fall, and can be found in the Queen Anne’s County Student/ Parent handbook. This
policy needs to be read and signed by you and your child. For more information, the entire policy may be
found at http://qacps.org under student policies.
New Guidelines Announced for Free and Reduced Price School Meals
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has announced revised Income Eligibility Guidelines
for free and reduced-price school meals. The guidelines are set by the federal government and adopted by
MSDE. They are used to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price meals in the child nutrition programs
for the period July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015.
Household size and income is the most common way to determine eligibility. Parents/guardians will
continue to complete the Meal Benefit Application as they have in the past. Households will be informed
whether their children qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Many children will continue to qualify just
as they have in the past. Parents/guardians may reapply at any time during the school year and are
encouraged to do so if their household size goes up, they become unemployed, their income goes down, or
their household qualifies for FSP or TCA.
More information may be found on MarylandPublicSchools.org.
The Partnering for Youth After
School Program will begin on

The Judy Center
I was born in Marion, Illinois and reared
in Dexter, Missouri for the majority of
my life. I graduated from Dexter High
School and then attended Southeast
Missouri State University where I
received a Bachelor of Arts in Political
Science and English. I worked in
Washington, DC for the US Attorneys
Office and Skadden, Arps as a Legal
Assistant until the birth of my second
daughter. I returned to the workforce
in 2006 as Coordinator of Even Start
Family Literacy Program until 2011.
When the program closed, I returned to
graduate school and obtained my
Masters of Social Work degree while
working as Coordinator of the Judy
Center, a position I obtained in 2013. I
am the parent of 2 Queen Anne's
County High School graduates and 1
current Queen Anne's County High
School student. I am the step-parent of
two as well. I have been married to
William M. Miller, III publisher for the
Naval Institute and native of Baltimore,
Maryland since 1990. My pastimes
include horseback riding, travel, and
enjoying my new granddaughter, Layla
and spending time with friends and
family. I have been a resident of Queen
Anne's County since 1998.

This is my first year working with the
Judy Center Partnership as the
Administrative Secretary. I have
worked as an ESOL Tutor and
Secretary for the past seven years
and lived in the county for twelve
years. I am the parent of two
wonderful children. I am excited to
work with the Judy Center
staff. Sudlersville Elementary School
has been a wonderful place to work.
I anticipate a great 2014-2015 school
year. See you then!
