MAINE
Maine utilized funding from the tobacco
settlement to fund approximately 30 School
Health Coordinators in the state.
Two years ago the funding was cut and most
schools could not afford to keep those
positions. The impact of those positions was
huge. However, there are now strong voices
that continue to advocate for the funding to be
returned and they are armed with evidence of
great success.

Maine Statue 20-A §5103
• Establishes that every school system in the
State of Maine has to have a dropout
prevention committee.
• Coordinated School Health has to be seen as
a very important component of dropout
prevention.
• AASA has created a cadre of School Leaders
from across the country to promote
Coordinated School Health.

Maine Statue 20-A §5152
• Establishes an advisory committee to the
Commissioner of Education on matters
dealing with Truancy, Dropout Prevention,
and Alternative Education
• We lobbied, unsuccessfully, to have money
reinstated in the state budget to fund School
Health Coordinators in the schools that had
previously had them (about 30). Support is
there, funding is not.

The
important
element of
time…


Small districts are challenged with
diminishing resources
Time is an even more precious
commodity in rural settings
Collaboration within districts and
among related districts has proven to
be a key and necessary element to
success
Reaching out in Wisconsin
 Cooperative Education Service Agency – CESA
 CESAs were created when the state legislature
recognized the need for a service unit designated to
serve educational needs in all areas of Wisconsin by
serving as a link between school districts and the
state.
 This support is based solely on the needs of the local
districts.
 Wisconsin has 12 CESA regions statewide.
 CESA #3, in Southwest Wisconsin, serves 31 School
Districts.
Partnership presentation…
 January 15th,2014: A joint presentation with AASA’s
Leadership for Healthy Children & Schools, WI
Cancer Control Program, and Transform WI project
to the District Administrators of CESA #3.
 Goal to broaden the reach and promote Coordinated
School Health at the District and Regional levels.
 Next Steps…reaching out to local and state
government leaders!
