Shopping on water concept, Amsterdam,
the Netherlands
The redevelopment plan for Amsterdam’s Buiksloterham industry complex
located on the IJ bay includes a special water program for which we’ve
developed a concept. It envisions an archipelago of small floating ‘islands’
connected to each other with bridges and quays. Here, ateliers and shops
for traditional handicraft artists can be built, as well as simple eating and
drinking facilities – a ‘floating market’ concept like those in South-east Asia.
This means no land is equired for new development, and it also offers a
unique socio-cultural opportunity to Amsterdam’s Asian community, which
has longdesired to establish an Asian-themed program in the city. Including
them in planning and development gives them the opportunity to do so.
