What is a

Biofuels are fuels made from plants. Crops are grown to
produce biofuels.
In Kerala, the main biofuel crops are jatropha and sugar
cane.

Disadvantages:
- If more land is used for sugarcane then there is less food
grown (around one quarter of people in India do not have
enough food).
- Sugarcane and jatropha use a lot of water.
- Trees have been but down to make room, meaning more
greenhouse gases and soil erosion.
- Expensive to make.

Advantages
- It reduces the amount of and cost of oil that India has to
import.
- Using biofuels should reduce the cost of fuel. This should in
turn help industries, so factories can employ more people who
will then have a higher standard of living.
- Burning biofuels put fewer greenhouse gases into the
atmosphere.
