Underground Mining Presents
Many Challenges.
• Environment is primary concern.
• Atmosphere.
• Ground conditions.
• No lighting.
History Teaches:
• Fire was first
tool used for
illumination in
underground
mining for
centuries.
• Later candle
sticks were used
up until the 19th
century.
Miners Needed Better
Lighting.
• Candles created
poor lighting.
• Candles started
fires, killing
thousands of
miners over the
centuries.
• Methane gas
explosions were
a big problem.
Walking Down the Drift
Was a Problem.
• Then someone
thought. Let’s stick
a candle on a cap.
• The cap lamp was
born.
• Still problems
persisted.
• Wax in your eye
burns. Hair burns
really nice. Smells
great too!
Invention Is the Mother
of Necessity.
• Lamps
progressed from
candles to
carbide.
• From carbide to
batteries.
• Better
illumination was
a must.
Invention of Portable
Battery Units.
• Greatly
increased
visibility.
• Reduced fire
hazards.
• Increased safety
in working
areas.

Advantage of Ni-Mh Battery over
Li-ion Battery:
• Nickel Metal
Hydride battery is
suitable for use in
methane
environments.
• Not suitable for
use in methane
environments.
Special
precautions must
be taken to avoid
Li-Ion battery fire
up or explosions
that can cause
serious
injuries.This is
because Lithium
when it comes in
contact with water
or air's moisture
burns violently.
Advantage of Ni-Mh Battery over
Li-ion Battery:
• Nickel Metal
Hydride battery
cells contain no
lead or cadmium
They contain only
mild toxins, so it is
more
environmentally
friendly than other
types of battery
cells.
• Lithium is
hazardous and not
environmentally
friendly.
Advantage of Ni-Mh Battery over
Li-ion Battery:
• Nickel Metal
Hydride battery are
simple to store and
transportTransportation
conditions are not
subject to
regulatory control.
• Lithium is subject
to strict
transportation
regulations.
Shipment and
storage of larger
quantities of Li-ion
batteries may also
be subjected to
regulatory control.
Advantage of Ni-Mh Battery over
Li-ion Battery:
• Nickel Metal
Hydride
chemical is an
established and
proven metal &
chemical
combination.
• Lithium technology
is not fully mature
— changes in its
metal and chemical
combinations
affect battery test
results.
Advantage of Ni-Mh Battery over
Li-ion Battery:
• Nickel Metal Hydride
battery is stable and
never has any heating
problems.
• Lithium Ion batteries
are volatile and have a
history of overheating
related problems. They
may lead to serious fire
or explosion that can
cause injuries & major
disaster in
underground methane
environments.
