Historical Context
 NHS Fife became a GSA centre in the mid 90’s
following a restraint related fatality.
 Various modes of delivery were attempted.
 Demand was greater than availability.
 Mounting evidence cast doubt on efficacy of
techniques in high stress situations.

 Fewer physical skills over a 2 day period

Implications For Training
 2 day Physical Interventions Course.
 ½ day Breakaway Course. (Both refreshed annually)
 Focus now on “safe outcomes” rather than
“technical proficiency”.
 “Dynamic Training”
Feedback
 Staff report techniques being “easier to pick up
and easier to remember”. They also now remark
on “feeling valued by management”.
 Ward managers report increased confidence and
reduction of incidents.
 Hospital Managers are happy at the savings the
new system has brought.
