Melanogenesis is the combined process of physical, biochemical and
morphological skin factors for protecting itself against the action of sun
radiations.
It consists of melanin production in the melanocyte, this being a cell

Melanogenesis: origin of skin depigmentation
Once melanin has been synthesised, melanosomes are exported towards keratinocytes.
In keratinocytes, melanosome membranes are disrupted and melanin protects cell DNA from
ultraviolet radiations.
The continuous desquamation and renewal process of skin corneocytes is the natural mechanism of
cell renewal and the melanin removal pathway.

Analyse the skin with Wood‘s light
Wood‘s light is a light beam emitted by a mercury lamp.
 Epidermal melasma: it becomes more obvious with light (dark fluorescence).
 Dermal melasma: it becomes attenuated/poor fluorescence.
 Mixed melasma: some areas become more obvious whereas others do not.
 Inapparent melasma: it vanishes with light (V or VI).

Stage 1: remove make-up and tone
Cleanse and tone with hydra milk cleanser and hydratonic.
Stage 2: degrease
Degrease the skin by applying the exfoliating solution with a gauze,
massaging from the forehead, cheeks and central area of the face.

Stage 3: protect
Protect with mesolips protector those areas which, due to their sensitivity,
should not be contacted with the mask.
Stage 4: treat
Apply cosmelan 1 mask with a gloved hand or with a spatula, applying a
bigger amount onto the affected areas, taking care of the eye contour
and the lips and gently spreading on the chin.
Let act for the recommended time according to the skin phototype.
The exposure time should be from 8 to 12 hours (as per the professional’s
judgment).
Once the exposure time is over, remove with abundant water.

If because of his/her labour activities one is subject to direct light sources, it is necessary to
repeat the sun protection application regularly.
During the first week post-treatment, it is advisable to avoid the following activities: swimming
in pools, sauna, exposure to direct heat sources, outdoor sports.
5. For how long is it recommended to perform the home care treatment?
It is recommended to perform the application for at least 4 months, which may be extended
up to 9 months depending on the progression of each individual case.
