University of Malaya Researchers’ Conference 2012
HIGH IMPACT RESEARCH (HIR)
UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA
BIRTH OF THE HIR ERA
Background for Chancellory HIR
HIR in UM started in February 2010 with internal fund
Central HIR Committee chaired by Tan Sri VC
Developed strong system to manage UM HIR projects
In 2010 & 2011, 4 cycles a year
In 2012, reduced to 2 cycles a year because of MoHE
Fund (www.hir.um.edu.my)
Background for Chancellory HIR
Cost-effectiveness : RM60K per Tier One publication
Capped at RM500K per project
Duration for 2 years only
Emphasis on niche areas and strengths of UM researchers
International collaborations, including with Malaysian
scientists overseas and Academic Icons
Background of MoHE HIR
Cabinet decision to support at least one research
university to break into the Top 100 world ranked
universities by 2015 based on QS Ranking
In one quixotic move, Tan Sri VC accepted the
challenge (placing our necks on the chopping board!)
MOHE Fund started in July/August 2011
Total allocation – RM590 million for 5 years
Five faculties and one Special Chancellory Project
