“In House” Scientific Review of Extramural Grant Application
Internal scientific review (SCTR’s SRC) of an extramural grant application (R01,
R03, R21, K-series, NSF)
Micro-grant for External Review of Extramural Grant Application
Request up to $500 to engage an external expert to review an extramural grant
application following an SRC pre-review of hypothesis and specific aims.
(NIH R-series, K-series, P-series, U-series, NSF, PCORI, AHRQ )

“In House” Scientific Review of Grant Application
Pre-review
On a rolling basis, applicants submit a pre-application (hypothesis, specific aims,
significance, innovation, PI biosketch) to the SCTR AppSite portal. Must be
related to an NIH R01, R03, R21, K-series, NSF, PCORI, AHRQ application. SCTR
staff will forward the application to 2 peer reviewers for a “Yes/No” decision within
1-2 weeks. All applicants will receive 3-4 sentences of critiques.
Faculty invited to submit a full application should submit: complete Research
Strategy, Specific Aims, All Biosketches, Project Description (K applicants will also
submit Career Development Plan, Mentor Plan etc.). SCTR Staff will forward to 2
Full Review peer reviewers to complete reviews within 4 weeks. Applications also will receive
a biostatistics review, as well as a budget, regulatory and intellectual property (IP)
consults if the appropriate sections/requests are submitted.

Follow-up
Reviews will not be discussed at SRC meetings. Reviews will be sent to
applicants 3 business days prior to the next scheduled SRC meeting. Upon
request of the applicant, following a regularly scheduled SRC meeting, one of the
paid reviewers will meet with the applicant for 10 minutes to answer questions
related to the critiques, as a STAR consult.
The awardee must agree to provide annual progress report data to SCTR for the
next 5 years including: # of extramural applications related to the micro-grant, # of
successful awards, # of IP disclosures, # of publications etc. as requested.
Micro-grant for External Expert Review of Extramural
Grant Application
Pre-review
MUSC faculty may request an External Grant Review Micro-grant. Applicants will
submit the following: hypothesis, specific aims, significance, innovation, PI
biosketch, and 2-3 proposed external reviewer names through the SCTR AppSite
portal. Must be related to an NIH R-series, K-series, P-series, U-series, NSF,
PCORI, AHRQ application. SCTR staff will forward the application to 2 peer
reviewers for a “Yes/No” decision within one-two weeks. All applicants will receive
3-4 sentences of critiques.
Award
Conditions
Upon award of the Micro-grant, the applicant must forward confirmation of
acceptance, to review the extramural application, from the applicant-chosen
external reviewer. The communication must also confirm the agreed upon cost of
the review (not to exceed $500), and the timeframe for the reviewer to complete
the review.
Follow-up
The Micro-grant awardee must agree to provide annual report data to SCTR for
the next 5 years including: # of extramural applications related to the micro-grant,
# of successful awards, # of IP disclosures, # of publications
