Case Study
- SLCoLibrary Services -
4/27/2012
ULA 2012 CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE
13
Background
• Largest library system in the state –
617,000+ patrons
• Active web site : >3M page
views/month (including catalog)
• ~ 2 person web development team
plus many librarian content authors

14
Problem
• We knew there was a demand for a mobile presence.
• We are small web development organization
– Developing a simple mobile site is relatively easy
– BUT, a site that provides the services we need much
more difficult
• catalog, account info, downloadables, etc.
• Significant Application Development
– Integration with in house systems such as ILS and
authentication systems and integration of external
sources such as Overdrive require significant application
development
Our Solution
• Outsource some Development & Hosting

15
Outsource vs. Insource
“You get what you get.”
• Outsourcing
– Advantages
• don’t need staff/expertise
• someone else does some of the work
• someone else deals with the app stores,
– Disadvantages
• less control
• less getting what you want
• Biggest Advantage
– Take advantage of work someone else has
done for integration

16
Mobile Site Design Philosophy
• not building a full site/services
• supports top three platforms only
– iOS, Android, mobile web
• not for tablets – current site looks great on
tablets 1024x768
• specifically designed for mobile on the go user
• User-centric
– for on the go patrons
– no research capabilities
– dead simple interface
• Resist trying to add everything for all
stakeholders

17
Vendor Search & Procurement
• Only a few vendors in this space
• This simplified procurement process
greatly – only a few candidates
• Easy and unanimous selection of
Boopsie
– Experienced integrator of services
– Familiar with our ILS
– Interesting and advanced technology (CMS,
web interfacing with our site, MARC record
import, etc.)

Site Design Philosophy & Methods
• Skipped wire frames – GUI design
outside of our control
– Significant design control over color
palette, icons, etc.

App Architecture & Content
Management System (CMS)
• App framework resides on mobile
device – improves performance
• Some data resides on Boopsie servers
• Some content pulled real time from
CMS (Google Docs)
• MARC records transferred nightly
• Some functions interact with our web
site like login and account using HTTP
calls

20
Usability Testing, Testing & More Testing
• Critically important
• Somewhat limited by “You get what
you get”
• Used a “simulator” to test before
submission and deployment in app
stores
• Testers included patrons young and
old, librarians, and developers

Boopsie Company Stats
• Serve about 2,500 libraries counting
branches
• Integrate with practically all ILS, including
open source like Evergreen, and with some
obscure ILS
• Pricing model tied to the size of the
population served
• Boopsie estimates the cost for Utah libraries
smaller than SLCoLibrary.org to be $3K/year
to $10K/year
– Could be cheaper if multiple libraries signed up
at the same time

Success or Failure ?
• Popular application
– Enhanced by strong promotion
•
•
•
•
Custom QR codes on placards and site
Posters in library
Digital signage
Media coverage
• App downloads – approx. 8,000 downloads in
six months
• Visitation
– page views have risen to nearly 500K/month
• Very positive user feedback

And Finally…
• Get it
• Try it
• Commission the Build
of an App Yourself
• Questions ?
