2014 THE GREEN KNIGHT;
Studio OxL collaborated with Anja Lubke, Mei
Architecten en Era Contour on a proposal of
160 dwelling units in Ridderkerk ( NL ).
The urban master plan included 160 units and was given by
municipality via a brief.The buildings had to be designed according
to the construction methodology of Era Contour and offer
affordable- and middle level rent. The program consisted out of
45 low-rise row housing, 20 bungalow units for senior residences
and 95 apartments in a courtyard building.The goal was to make
a sober plan with extra attention towards the public space,
human orientation and building entrances. The big courtyard
has been equipped with tools and areas for personal allotments
or gardens to enable residence to grow food or flowers. The
leftover space can be equipped with playgrounds or small sports
field in a later stage.Both low-rise and apartment building have
been foreseen with concrete elements that emphasize the semi
private areas. These elements can be used as urban furniture
and enable people to sit, meet, converse and oversee the public
area in front of their houses. At night the staircase light up and
appear as lanterns in the street. They mark the entrances and
enlighten the passages in order to give a safe orientation in the
neighborhood. The colors of the lanterns are extended into the
interior, making the entrance bigger and a hybrid between public
and private. Its bright color decreases the change of bright graffiti
or vandalism. The street furniture and the bright elements are
included in the design for the whole plan, giving it a recognizable
and holistic esthetic.
