Differences between Texts
Intermediate Reading
CCSS R 3/4/5.RL.5 Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose and
refer to the structural elements of poems (verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (casts of
characters, setting descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking
about a text.
Complete a focus lesson with students, using the anchor charts, before using this
activity in stations. Laminate cards and anchor charts for durability.

Directions:
1. With the students at your station, review the Anchor Charts
about Characteristics of Poetry, Prose and Drama.
2. Take turns choosing a card with a picture on it. The
tallest person will go first.
3. Decide which type of text the picture relates to and tell
why. Choose from:

• Prose
• Drama
4. The student to your left will check your answer on the
Answer Key.
5. When you have gone through all of the cards together,
choose one of the sample text to read together. Enjoy!
Challenge: Use the local newspaper or Internet to see what
plays are running in your hometown. Find out the title, show
times and cost of a ticket.
