YOUR BIG IDEA: Improving the Patient Experience at Penn Medicine.
What’s an Innovation Tournament?
An Innovation Tournament is a structured idea competition.
Like American Idol does for aspiring singers, or March Madness does for
college basketball teams seeking the national championship, “Your Big Idea:
Penn Medicine’s Innovation Tournament” provides a structured,competitive
environment for ideas from Penn Medicine’s faculty and staff to be evaluated,
and potentially developed and funded.

How does it work?
Your Big Idea Format
Faculty and staff submit ideas via the
web, by email, or in physical ‘drop boxes’
The most promising ideas move on to
facilitator-led workshop that results in a
draft business plan.
The “Round 2 workshop winners” refine
business plan with proposed budget and
cost/benefit analysis. Resources provided
to develop presentations.
Ideas are pitched to Penn Medicine
Leadership. Exceptional ideas receive
funding and resources for implementation.

4
How are the ideas rated?
Round 1
Submitted ideas are presented to website users randomly and are rated on the
website using a 5-star rating system, similar to sites like Yelp. Those votes,
coupled with votes from a committee representing all entities results in the
selection of 15-20% of the ideas that move on to Round 2.
Round 2
Those 15-20% participate in in-person workshops, where
participants will vote and select ideas that will move forward
to the final round
Final Round
In the Final Round, senior executives from across
Penn Medicine will decide which ideas will win and
be funded. The final round will take place in a town
hall setting, open to all employees.
