C=Connecting
 Connecting is the most challenging of
the 3 elements
 Connecting is a matter of trust,
sensitivity, and focused attention
 In practice, connecting looks a lot like
listening
9
C=Connecting
 Communicating with the person at an emotional level
 Listening with your heart, empathetically, with
concern
 Tuning in nonjudgmentally
 Showing and feeling genuine concern, hope, and
compassion
 Encourage persons to express feelings

P = emPowerment
As the individual in emotional crisis begins to feel safe
and is able to speak it is important that they begin
planning for a return to life in the community.
 Surviving emotional crisis resembles recovery
from illness in many ways
 The personÕslife is dramatically disrupted for a
period
 Sooner or later things return to something like
ÒnormalÓ
12
13
P = emPowerment
ItÕscrucial that the planning stage be focused on
specifics. Ask the person to consider:
 What do I want my life to look like?
 What can I do to take good care of myself?
 WhatÕs ht e next important thing I can do now?

What we bring to helping

is our interior experience.
