• 22 member states are participating
• Includes 20% of WI students in grades 3-8
• Smarter Balanced asked for school
volunteers in Fall 2013
• A representative sample was drawn from the
school volunteers
Spring 2014 Field Test
Purpose and Benefits
• Provides Smarter Balanced the opportunity to:
– ensure assessments are valid, reliable and fair for all students
– Determine which questions work well and which need to be improved
– Evaluate the performance of more than 20,000 assessment items and
performance tasks
– Set preliminary achievement standards during the Summer of 2014
• Provides the district and schools the opportunity to:
– Interact with online system
– Preview online tests
– Gauge readiness for spring 2015
• Because the Field Test is a “test of a test”, schools will not receive
scores

Scheduling Reminders
• A student must participate in the classroom activity prior to
the performance task. Track absent students.
• The classroom activity involves preparation. Activity details
must be downloaded from TIDE.
– Recommended that the building testing coordinator confirm the
download with the teacher 1 week prior to the activity date
• Block 1 begins on March 18 (Tuesday)
• Block 1 includes the end of Quarter 3
• Block 2 includes Spring break
• Block 2 has 9 possible testing days
• Attempts should be made to adjust for absent students, but
not to over extend your resources.

students should not discuss the topic with one

• Click on Field Tests
• Click on TA Interface
Login Script
• Test Administrators should follow Login Script
• Directions that are read to students are indicated by
the word “SAY”
• Script must be followed exactly and used each time
a test is administered
• Schools are responsible for making copies for their
test administrators.
• Script can be printed from the WI Test Administration
Manual, pages 45-49.
Student Login

Student Login Information
• Educational Accountability will provide schools an
electronic database of student login information along
with student names if desired
• Schools may use database to create student labels
for login process
• If you want to sort labels by teacher name
(homeroom/advisory) let Renee know and that
variable can be added in the database
Force Quit Commands
• If the secure browser becomes unresponsive and you
cannot pause or close the session, you may force quit
the secure browser
• These commands should be used if the Close Secure
Browser button does not work

• Approximately 15 items per grade band (6 ELA items and 8-9 math items)
• Only non-performance task items (selected response)
• Includes new items (matching tables, fill-in tables, evidence based selected
response)
• Includes all universal tools, designated supports and accommodations on the Field
Test
Practice Test
• Available by for each grade level (grades 3-8, 11)
• Approximately 30 ELA items and 30 math items per grade level
• Includes both non-performance tasks and performance tasks
• Most universal tools, designated supports and accommodations are included;
updates are scheduled for late April
