ADVISOR PRESENTATION– 2013
BACKGROUND
– Herbicides have delivered vast improvements in weed control across Australia’s farming
system, improving yields boosting profits.
– Herbicide use is under threat. Conservation (no-til) farming has made us overly
dependent on herbicides, with resistant weeds threatening the productivity gains of the
past 20 years.
– It is time to act and protect the good work of Australian farmers in combating weeds.
– Weed Smart promotes the long-term sustainability of herbicide use in Australian
agriculture.
– Growers need to use a diverse range of tactics – both chemical and non-chemical – and
focus on preventing seed production and driving down weed seed banks to ensure
herbicide sustainability.

Key Messages
MUST DO
1. Act now to stop weed seed set.
2. Capture weed seeds at harvest.
3. Rotate crops and herbicides modes of action.
4. Test for resistance to establish a clear picture of paddock-by-paddock farm status.
5. Aim for 100% control and monitor of every spray event.

10 WAYS AUSTRALIAN FARMERS CAN
FIGHT HERBICIDE RESISTANCE
AND THEN
6. Don’t automatically reach for the glyphosate.
7. Never cut the on-label herbicide rate and carefully manage spray drift and residues.
8. Plan clean seed into clean paddocks with clean borders.
9. Use the double knock technique.
10. Employ crop competitiveness to combat weeds.
