What RESOURCE played a major role
in exploration and expansionism in
U.S. history?
GOLD
History of GOLD
Who discovered it & Where did it come from?
Gold is believed to have been
discovered as far back as 4000 B.C.
It was probably mined in the
Transylvanian Alps or the Mount
Pangaion area in Thrace where a
culture, centered in what is today
Eastern Europe, began to use
gold to fashion decorative
objects.

The first money in the form of gold coins appeared about
700 B.C.
History of GOLD
Why is it so valuable to humans?
Gold has always been powerful stuff!
Throughout history, gold has appealed to
humans.

m
It was the first known medal widely known
to our species and humans valued it even
before it was money.
Early civilizations equated gold with gods and rulers, and gold
was sought in their name and dedicated to their glorification.
The “value” of gold began in the Classic period of history
where the Greeks mined it and used it as money.
GOLD in U.S. History
With the “discovery” of the
New World by Christopher
Columbus and the Spanish
came the search for GOLD.

In 1511, King Ferdinand of
Spain said to explorers, “Get
gold, humanely if you can, but
by all hazards, get gold,”
launching massive expeditions
to the newly claimed lands of
the Western Hemisphere.
GOLD in U.S. History
Upon becoming a new nation, the first U.S. gold coin
was struck by Ephraim Brasher, a goldsmith, in 1787.

And from there the search for gold in the United
States was a never ending adventure!
GOLD in U.S. History
The state of North Carolina was the first to
document gold discovery in the United States.
In 1803, gold
was discovered
at Little
Meadow Creek,
sparking the
first U.S. gold
rush.
In 1799, a
17-pound gold
nugget was
found in
Cabarrus
County.

GOLD in U.S. History
This event would lead to
“gold fever” in the
United States.
Numerous hopefuls
would try to strike it rich
by discovering gold.
Whether it was in
California, Nevada,
South Dakota, or Alaska,
many risked everything
to be a part of the
“Gold Rush.”
