game in the nineteenth century?


Cricket was the most popular English
game because it allowed gentry and
peasantry to play a team game in
harmony. Primarily a pastime for
shepherds, the components of the
game included the short downland
grass, a ball of wool to be hit with the
crook and the sheep hurdle (or
wicket) acting as the target.








SUPPORTED THE NEW LONDON CLUB
AND SECOND, HAMBLEDON PLAYERS
WERE NOW EMPLOYED BY THE MCC
AS COACHES AND PLAYERS. TOOK ON
ROLE AS GOVERNING BODY. PLAYED
AT THE FIRST LORDS GROUND IN
1787.
