Literacy Through Dance
By Amanda Morrison
Learning Literacy in and through
Dance
Students can engage in interdisciplinary
learning by working on literacy skills in the
dance classroom.
 Classroom teachers can also use dance to
teach literacy skills.


Language of Dance
The Language of
Dance (LOD) is a
system of symbols
used for reading and
writing dance.
 You can take classes
to learn the Language
of Dance Symbols at
the LOD Center in NY.

Learning Literacy through Dance
Abroad
A Masters of Music
Education student is
using a “Movement
Alphabet” to teach
her students the
musical alphabet.
 In London students
created a “Grammar
Dance” to learn
different parts of
speech.

Dancing Poetry
I created a unit
entitled “Dancing
Poetry” that fostered
interdisciplinary
learning in the
subjects of Dance and
Language Arts.
 I used lesson plans
from Artsedge to get
ideas for my unit.
