Strategies for Reading Fiction
Ask Questions - jot down two types.

Basic questions about what is
happening in the story.

Deeper-level question about
characters’ motivations or the
author’s overall message.
Draw conclusions - put details together

Carefully examine the evidence before
drawing a conclusion.

Make sure that your conclusions fit the
general theme or tone of the story.
Identify with the characters.

Imagine yourself in the character’s
situation.

Think about how you might feel or react in
that situation.
Use your senses - sights, sounds, and smells

Match the descriptions of sights, sounds,
smells, and feelings with similar situations
that you have personally experienced.

Use your imagination and the details that
the author provides to picture the action in
your mind.
