 1920s “Jazz Age”

 Jazz incorporates West African and Latin

American rhythms, elements of African

American spirituals, and ragtime, as well as

European harmonies

 Harlem Renaissance → creative black artists, writers, and musicians living in Harlem

→ reviving the arts and black culture

Harlem Renaissance Mini-Project

 Directions: Create your own interpretation of the Harlem

Renaissance by describing how artists and writers expressed pride in their cultural heritage. For your interpretation, you may provide examples of art, music, theater, literature, or the Harlem Renaissance as a whole.

 You may choose one of the following ways to describe the Harlem Renaissance, its artists and writers, and how they expressed their cultural heritage :

 A Descriptive Paragraph

 A Poem

 A Song

 You must provide historical evidence in your writing!

Your project should answer the following guiding questions:

 What was the Harlem Renaissance?

 Who were the artists and writers of this time?

 How did they choose to express their cultural heritage?

 Descriptive Paragraph: Establish a clear claim supported by at least 3 warrants describing your interpretation of the Harlem

Renaissance with specific evidence from the text. You must provide a minimum of THREE references to specific content covered in class and have a minimum of 5-6 sentences.

PLEASE PROOF READ! The descriptive paragraph should be put on construction paper with picture to represent the Harlem

Renaissance.

 Poem : Create a poem describing your interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance with specific evidence from the text. You must have a minimum of four stanzas with four lines per stanza. You need to make specific reference to content covered in class in

EACH stanza. PLEASE PROOF READ! The poem should also be presented in a creative way (i.e. construction paper, picture, color, ect.)

 Song: Create a poem describing your interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance with specific evidence from the text. This song can be created in any genre but it must be 5 stanzas long which includes one hook/chorus. You need to make specific reference to content covered in class in

EACH stanza. PLEASE PROOF READ! The song needs to be typed.
