In this Functional Skills
unit you will have to
think like a baker
Bessie, your long lost Auntie,
has given you the chance to bake
some cakes and wants you to sell
them at her local car boot sale on
Sunday morning.
What maths will a baker use? L.Obj : to use weights and money in real life context

You will have to buy the
ingredients from one of your
local corner shops. The amount
of baking time and preparation
time you have will be enough
for 25 cakes.
You can bake as many
different types of cakes or
sausage rolls as you like and
will be able to sell everything
you bake (nobody knows
YOU baked them!)

You will be given a sheet
detailing the price people
are willing to pay for one
of Bessie’s cakes.
You must make exactly 25
cakes of whichever type
you choose, the ingredients
you need to buy are
available but you must buy
all the ingredients in one of
two shops.

Being such a great aunt,
Bessie has given you her
secret recipe sheet to bake
from, and a big oven to
bake them in.

To help you with the ingredients you need, there
are two local shops that will give you a discount
on their prices.
Danny’s Discount Delicacies
Give 10% discount on all
purchases
Farman’s Fancy Foodstuffs
Give £1 off for every
complete £20 spent

To help you decide what to bake
and how much you will need for
each food item, you will be
given a workings sheet for each
type of cake.
Fill in the number
of cakes you are
going to make and
the ingredients you
will need to buy
and from where in
the columns as
shown

To help you work out the benefits of
Danny’s Discount and Farman’s Fancy
foodstores .... Fill in this table with your final decisions and the
profits you have made.
Important
The ingredients
you buy must be
in full packets.
If you have any
leftovers they will
be in Bessie’s
cupboard ready
for the next car
boot sale!!

Once you have worked out the cost and money you get from the
sales, you will need to show the money you have made on the
customary A3 poster along with the money and cakes........
3 chocolate
cakes
4 lots of profiteroles
6 bags of
cookies
I sold 25 cakes for £72
They cost me £47.17
I have £30.83 for my
Christmaths presents 
5 lemon cakes
7 fruit cakes
