Introduction to
SHE Code 26
“Safe Use of Lifting
Equipment and
Lifting
Accessories”
Why a Lifting Equipment and
Lifting Accessories Code?
• This code addresses issues
raised by the Lifting Operations
and Lifting Equipment
Regulations (LOLER),1998.
• Failure of lifting equipment has
the potential to cause major injury
and is reportable to the HSE.
• STFC has over 5000 registered
items of lifting equipment !
Key features
• Only purchase BS EN or ISO standard
lifting equipment.
• Equipment designed ‘in-house’ must
be approved by a competent person.
• All lifting equipment must be
registered so that it can be inspected.
• All lifting equipment must be securely
stored when not in use.
• Ensure that it has been inspected
and is not damaged in any way
before use.
Key points
• Read section of the Code relevant to you.
• Only carry out lifting operations for which you
are suitably trained.
• Difficult or Complex lifts must be subject to a
Risk Assessment.
• Consider people who may pass or work close
to the lift area not just the people carrying out
the lift.
• Ensure that equipment and accessories are
suitable for the lift.
• Check that your contractors are complying with
this code through their Lifting Plans and
Method Statements.
