Introduction
Plenary Session on Heavy and Extra-heavy
crude oils
LACPEC 10 Conference
Lima, Dec. 3 - 2010
Outlook – Oil demand and supply
• World oil demand at least in the next two decades is
expected to continue to increase at a slow rate,
whereas production from conventional light crude oil
fields seems to have reached a peak.
• The decline of production from light crude oil fields will
have to be compensated by non-conventional
production, mainly from heavy and extra-heavy crude
oil fields.
• Worldwide downstream facilities (pipelines and
refineries, in particular) will have to be adapted to
changes in oil supply.
World Oil Endowment
The total endowment is estimated to 12-13.4 trillion barrels Venezuela and Canada together have ~25-28% of the total.

World Oil Supply to 2030
The Subandean basin have important
heavy oil reserves
• This basin includes the
Orinoco belt
(Venezuela), the Llanos
basin (Colombia), the
ITT and other fields
(Ecuador) and the
Maranon fields (Peru).
• Mexico, Brazil and
Argentina have also
significant heavy crude
oil reserves.
Colombia – Development of heavy
crudes from the Llanos Eastern Basin
The ANH project
• The zone was divided in eight
blocks that have been awarded
to companies ready to execute
a minimal exploration work
program,, with investments
higher than a fixed minimum.
• The project concludes with
the operators providing ANH all
the information collected from
wells and geophysical surveys
and fulfillment of socioenvironmental management
plans

The Project Cycle for Heavy Oil fields
• Fiscal terms (flexible to take into consideration oil price volatility)
• To probe reserves Reservas probadas + por confirmar
Contract
negotiation • EIA
• To verify the oil fields productivity
Evaluation & • To define technologies
experimental • To design the production facilities (incl. transport)
production

Production
• To review and update EIAs
• To optimize production
• To integrate producers and develop synergies and economies of scale
Next Steps
• To verify reserves and production potential
• To prepare EIAs and socio-environmental
management plans
• To evaluate technology options and production
schemes, including integrated production from
several operators.
• To evaluate the adequacy of the fiscal regime.
• To decide the Government support and
Petroperu’s rol.
