 For starters, its name- fought between the
Peloponnesians (Sparta and allies) and the Athenians
and allies.
 Also, it is the only one of two sets of wars we really
discussed related to Greece (unless you count Troy).
 How can I remember that Sparta won? Well its called
Peloponnesian Wars- they won, so its named after
them.

 How did it start?
Competing for influence in Western Mediterranean region
 How did it end?
Rome won
 What were the longer term effects?
 Rome gains an empire- at first in Western Mediterranean,
then in Eastern Med.
 Carthage destroyed

 For starters, its name- fought between the
Carthaginians (Carthage was a Phoenician colony and
Punic is Latin name for Phoenicians)
 Also, Punic sounds like Punish- which is what Rome
does to Carthage (by burning the city and “salting the
earth”)
