SIMILE, METAPHOR, AND
PERSONIFICATION
WRITING EXERCISE

STEP 1
Choose an emotion
Happy
Frustrated
Surprised
Proud
Nervous
STEP 2
 Choose CONCRETE NOUNS that can be connected to the
emotion
 Ex. Happy= flowers, sunshine, beach…
 Frustrated= computer, zipper, traffic, spam…
STEP 3
 Create at least 5similes/metaphors that are linked to the
chosen emotion. Use the concrete nouns!
 Ex. Happy= Like dasies in an unmowed field
 Frustrated= Like an uncooperative zipper
STEP 4
 Extend the simile/metaphor. Now is where PERSONIFICATION
is needed.
 Ex. Like daises in an un-mowed field. The flowers poking their heads
through the grass to soak in the nourishing sunshine; the grass
waving in the breeze and bowing in respect.
 Like an uncooperative zipper. The teeth catching and refusing to
release until finally the material tears with a gasp of pain.
STEP 5
 Write a poem!
 Line 1= These things are how you make me feel.
 Line 2-?= extended similes and metaphors
 Your last line= Like____________ and _____________.
 (use 2 concrete nouns)
 Repeat the last line 2 times.
