JOURNEY’S END
Osborne would be a better
company commander than
Stanhope.
HIS RELIABILITY
 He
is always sober, unlike current
company commander Stanhope.
"Drinking like a fish as usual?" (says
Hardy). This quote just backs up the fact
that Stanhope is an alcoholic.
 He
 He
is very tolerant.
has gained wisdom since he is 45+
years old.
HIS APPEARANCE
 He
is described as “Physically as hard
as nails.” Page 1 by narrator.
 He
is good at looking after people and has
been known to be “fatherly”.
 Everybody
calls him “Uncle” and this
shows that the other officers look up to
him. "You'll find the other officers call
me uncle" Osborne
 He
is optimistic; “ There’s something
rather romantic about it all” Osborne
describing the Very lights.
 "You
don't think I'm going potty?"
Asks Stanhope to Osborne which again
shows how much Stanhope trusts
Osborne. This also shows how unstable
Stanhope is and how he doesn’t deserve to
be the company commander.
 He
often appears as Stanhope’s superior;
“Dear old Uncle, tuck me up" Says
Stanhope to Osborne - their relationship
is almost father to son at times. This was
when Stanhope was drunk – again!
HE IS A GOOD FRIEND
 He
is defensive of Stanhope when other
officers talk about him behind his back.
"You know you mustn't expect to find
him quite the same" Osborne kindly
warns Raleigh so he doesn't get a shock
when he meets Stanhope.
 He is polite and shows good manners.
 "Because
he's stuck it till his nerves
have got battered to bits, he's called a
drunkard" This quote shows how much
Osborne cares about Stanhope and also
how much he respects him.
STANHOPE’S SARCASM
 "How
awfully nice - if the brigadier's
pleased" sarcastically after Osborne's
death Stanhope shows little respect for
those above him.
 "Yes, I'm a hero" sarcastically says
Stanhope as he doesn't consider himself to
be the hero Raleigh believes him to be.
STANHOPE’S DRINKING PROBLEMS
 "Without
being doped with whisky I'd go mad with fright" Stanhope knows
he has a drinking problem.
 "He'll write and tell her I reek of
whisky all day" Stanhope is worried that
Raleigh will write home and tell his sister
about him. This gives him the idea to
censor Raleigh's letters.
