WARM-UP (5 MIN)
“IF YOU TELL A LIE BIG ENOUGH AND KEEP
REPEATING IT, PEOPLE WILL EVENTUALLY
COME TO BELIEVE IT.”
HAVE YOU HEARD THE ABOVE QUOTE
BEFORE? IF SO, WHERE? WHAT DOES
THIS QUOTE MEAN? DO YOU AGREE OR
DISAGREE WITH IT?
FULL QUOTE
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it,
people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can
be maintained only for such time as the State can
shield the people from the political, economic
and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus
becomes vitally important for the State to use all of
its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the
mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the
truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
- Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda in Nazi
Germany

WHY DID HITLER ACHIEVE POPULARITY?
•
•
Hitler appealed to the
emotions of Germans
at the time
Hitler and the Nazis
created “a cult of
personality” or a
heroic or godlike
public image
HITLER APPEALED TO THE EMOTIONS OF
GERMANS



The treaty of Versailles
left Germans broke and
resentful and Hitler played
into these emotions
especially nationalism
and militarism.
Germans had long valued
a strong militaristic
Germany since unification
By producing an extensive
war machine and other
manufacturing projects
Hitler substantially
decreased unemployment
HITLER ESTABLISHED A CULT OF PERSONALITY

As we looked at
yesterday, through
Propaganda, the Nazi’s
built a cult of personality
around Hitler which
portrayed the following:
He always knew what
was best for Germany
 He was both strong and
loving (father analogy)
 He produced results
