Writing with
sensory details
Using similes and
metaphors!
What is a simile?
 It
is a comparison using the words “like” or
“as.”

She is as pretty as a flower
What is a metaphor?
 It
is a comparison that does not use “like”
or “as,” so it is more direct.

His eyes were fire when he saw his enemy.
 Similes
and metaphors always compare
nouns with other nouns.
Simile or metaphor?
 She
had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh,
like that sound a dog makes just before it
throws up.
 Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose
hair after a sneeze.
 Patty was a raging tiger when she lost her
lunch money.
 She was as nutty as a fruitcake
Similes and Metaphors in Music
 Put
your name on the yellow paper.
 Listen to the song Firework by Kati Perry
and underline all of the similes in this song.
 Listen to the song again and underline all
of the metaphors.
 On the front of your paper, write down
the similes and metaphors that you found.
Sensory Details
What are the 5 senses?
 1. Sight
 2. Touch
 3. Sound
 4. Smell
 5. Taste
So what?
 Recalling
sensory details and
adding them to your story provides
a much richer story
 Being aware of your senses also
helps you remember an event
better
Sensory Details
 In
your personal narrative writing,
you will:
 Use details that really appeal to the
senses so that the reader can
actually feel, see, smell, taste, or
hear what you are describing.
