Three Most Common Speech Disorders
Voice
Fluency
Articulation
*Speech = sounds used to form words/Language = words used to form sentences and
thoughts.
Students with speech problems may be difficult to
understand in the classroom. The most severe students
also may sometimes struggle with spelling and the
ability to read accurately and fluently.

Basic Sound Errors, e.g./l, r, s/

Students may receive:





Training for placement
Drill practice several times per week
depending on the severity of the problem
Home practice packets
Students are gone from general education
classes for much shorter time!
Grade levels are scheduled for blocks of
time (vs. by individual student) to reduce
run-around time e.g. most 4th graders are
seen between 10:20-11:00 am

Students who have more severe problems
with speech intelligibility e.g. dysarthria,
cleft palate, apraxia or phonological
disorder

Gone from class for longer time, e.g. 25minute session a few times per week

Students may receive:

Therapy activities that also may support
spelling and reading skills
