Lesson 2
How was the New

divided and
settled?
New Jersey Divides
 Soon after New Jersey became a colony, problems arose
over boundaries.
 A boundary is a line that divides one area of land from
another.
 Some people argued over where land began and ended.
 Others argued over larger boundaries including the
boundary between New York and New Jersey.
Proprietors
 How did the problems begin?
 The Duke of York split the land between
Lord John Berkley and George Carteret.
(new land owners)
 Berkley sold his share to Quakers in 1674
 1676- Carteret and the Quakers decided to
split up and divide the colony.
Proprietors
 Quakers- West Jersey
(own government)
 Carteret- East Jersey
(own government)
 The boundary between
the two was poorly
drawn. Because of this
colonists argued over
the boundary.

land. *Also slaves from Africa & West Indies

 People bought small pieces of land in town, and
huge amounts outside of town (plantations)
New Jersey Unites
 1702- Queen Anne of England united East Jersey
and West Jersey
 East & West became a royal colony of New
Jersey, and queen chose who governs there.
 Capitals= Perth Amboy AND Burlington
 Governor and assembly people would take turns
meeting in both capitals.
