contraception
Sex before marriage opinions
For
Against
Religious people
believe a child should
be brought up in a
secure environment
with a mum and a
dad!
If you indulge in sex
before marriage too
much the act can
become
‘cheapened’!
You would never buy a
pair of shoes without
trying them on, so you
must have sex before
marriage to see if you
and your partner are
compatible!
All religious people
agree that sleeping
around is wrong
and that sex should
be with someone
you love and trust!
Not all people want
to get married, but
does this mean they
should remain
celibate?
Success criteria:
Sex can express one
persons love for another.
You do not need to be
married to be able to
show your love for
someone else.
Your task is to identify which
comments are for and which
are against sex before
marriage, you then need to
decide your own point of
view
Contraceptives are
available today to
stop pregnancy so
sex before marriage
is okay.
Sex is a complex issue
and if you sleep
around, you can
never be sure that
you or someone else
might not get hurt!

Islamic attitudes to Sex
Islam has very strict views on love and sex.
These are based on passages from the Qur’an
and Hadith (the sayings of the Prophet
Muhammad).
The rule is simple: Sex outside marriage is totally
forbidden in Islam
Muslims view sexual intercourse as an
act of worship and as gift from Allah
As Christians do Muslims believe the purpose of sex is to procreate.
Muslims believe by having children they are contributing to Allah’s
creation
Sex should only happen within a marriage, but
polygamy is allowed in Islamic countries

Islamic attitudes to Pre-Marital Sex
Islam does not allow sex before marriage, and boys and girls are
kept apart after they reach puberty.
This is because:
• Sex before marriage is condemned in the Qur’an
• The Qur’an says that girls and boys should be separated after
puberty
• God gave sex to humans for the purpose of having children.
It should only happen between married couples so that
children are born into a family.

Islamic attitudes to Extra-Marital Sex
All sex outside of marriage is forbidden in the Qur’an.
All Muslims believe that adultery is wrong because:
• It is condemned by God in the Qur’an
• It breaks the marriage contract
• Islam says that the family is very important, and adultery
would damage it
Pre-marital and extra-marital sex carry severe penalties in
shari’ah law (the law of the Qur’an)
This also means that no Muslim is allowed to cohabit because it
is seen to be a sin

Because sex belongs in marriage, contraception is only
for married couples.
Islam generally allows contraception if:
The mother’s health would be put at risk by
becoming pregnant
If there is a chance that a child could be
born mentally or physically disabled
If the family cannot afford
to bring up a child

Muhammad did not forbid the use of contraception
Muslim couples cannot use contraception without the

wrong to interfere to prevent the birth of a
