There are 5 techniques for
using propaganda that we
will learn.
1. The first type of propaganda is:
BANDWAGON
This technique tries to
persuade everyone to join in
and do the same thing.
Bandwagon works because it makes you think
« everyone else is doing it » and so should you.
Why is this an example of
BANDWAGON?
What other examples of
BANDWAGON can you think of?
2. The second type of propaganda is:
LOADED
(EMOTIONAL)
WORDS
Using words that will make
people feel strongly about
someone or something.
Loaded (emotional) words work because
they make you feel a certain way.
What is the LOADED
WORD in this ad?
What other examples of LOADED
WORDS can you think of?
2. The third type of propaganda is:
TESTIMONIAL
Using words and images of a
famous person or expert to
persuade.
Testimonial works because you feel you can trust the
words of an expert or someone who is famous.
Who are you supposed to
trust in this TESTIMONIAL?
Who is the expert in this
TESTIMONIAL?
What other examples of
TESTIMONIAL can you think of?
2. The fourth type of propaganda is:
TRANSFER
Using images to bring up strong
feelings (positive or negative) in
order to persuade.
Transfer works because you transfer the happy feeling you
associate with a picture to happy feelings about a person or
product.
• What feelings does this
picture represent?
• What product are we
supposed to transfer those
feelings to?
• Even though Coke has nothing
to do with Christmas, we are
supposed to transfer the
happy feelings of Christmas to
the product.
What other examples of TRANSFER
can you think of?
2. The fifth type of propaganda is:
REPETITION
Using repeated messages or pictures
to persuade.
Repetition works because you remember
things you have seen more than once.
How many times
is the product
repeated in
this picture?
What other examples of REPETITION
can you think of?
LET’S REVIEW:
