produced?
A cartoon about Rasputin. It was published in a Russian
political magazine during the First World War (around
1915/1916).
There is a big version of Rasputin. He has the Tsar and Tsarina on his lap. Rasputin looks
evil and the Tsar looks really happy.
The source shows a giant Rasputin holding the Tsar and Tsarina. He looks as if he has
control over the Romanovs. This was made to make people hate Rasputin by making him
looked like he had the two leaders under his spell.
This source was published to damage the Tsarist regime. The source published in a
political magazine during the First World War. Many people were beginning to speak out
about the Tsar’s poor leadership of the army and the fact that the Tsar had left Rasputin
and his wife in charge of the country. Many important people in Russia felt that Rasputin
had a mystical control over the Tsarina and was corrupting government.
This sources expresses the negative views that many political groups had towards
Rasputin and attempts to convince the Russian people that the government needs to be
replaced. The Duma and social revolutionaries within Russia hated the close relationship
the Tsarina and Rasputin had. The ‘mad monk’ was meant to be caring for the Tsar’s
sickly son, but because they kept this secret, so many people made up their own minds.
The source shows Rasputin with his hand around the Tsarina, which relates to the belief
that Rasputin had magical control over the Tsarina and they were having an affair. He is
also much larger than the Romanovs because the revolutionaries wanted to make people
think that Rasputin had taken charge of Russia by corrupting government and selling
titles. They were hoping to undermine the Tsarist Regime in favour of democracy.
