House-Tree-Person (HTP)
History
The HTP was developed by
John N. Buck and is one of the
most distinguished and widely
used projective test.
BACK
HTP is to measure the aspects of a person's
personality through interpretation of
drawings and responses to questions.
BACK
HTP Timing
The test takes an average
of 150 minutes to
complete.
BACK
HTP Administration
• First phase of the test, test takers
are asked to use a crayon to draw
pictures, a house, a tree, and a
person.
• The second phase of the test, test
takers are asked to use a pencil to
draw the pictures.
• Each drawing is done on a
separate piece of paper and the
test taker is asked to draw as
accurately as possible.
NEXT
HTP Administration
Upon completion of
the drawings, test
takers are asked 60
questions about their
drawings. Some of the
examples are located
on the right.

HTP Administration
Three assumptions are also
considered as the basic interpreting
guidelines for HTP.
• The house figure reflects the testtaker’s home life and
relationships with the family.
• The tree figure reveals the
experiences of the test-taker.
• The person figure describes the
test-taker’s relationships with
other people, aside from his or
her family.

• The H-T-P can be
administered to anyone
over the age of 3.
• The subject simply
produces three drawings -of a house, a tree, and a
person in either a crayon
or pencil.
• Then he or she is given the
opportunity to describe,
define, and interpret these
drawings.
