What is Ready Gen?
Ready Gen is a comprehensive core ELA curriculum using
text sets and routine based instruction.
The goals of Ready Gen are:
1. To build strong readers that can develop big ideas and
understandings about all kinds of texts.
2. Promote thinking and understanding through text
based evidence.
3. Grow reading stamina and practice close reading on a
daily basis.
4. To practice writing that is closely linked to their
reading and is text based.
What does a Ready Gen Lesson
look like?
• First Read- Students read a portion of that
days text independently
• Close Read/Text Based Conversation- Class
meets and rereads part or all of the text and
teacher guides discussion.
• Thinking Map or Shared Activity- Class works
together to grow ideas about text
• Independent Task- Students apply information
from thinking map to complete work
• Support/Extension- small groups work
together to support or extend students work.
• Share 
Your Task…

tinkered p. 4
Close Reading Work
• Close Reading Questions
• 1. How would you describe the place where
Rachel grew up? Use details from the text.
• 2. Why was Rachel "glad to go outdoors"?
Use details from p. 2 to support your
answers.
• 3. In what way were Rachel's brother and
sister "more like an aunt and uncle"? What
did Rachel and Robert do together?
Independent Work
• Reading Analysis
• Historical context is the time and place
in which events took place. When
reading biographies, analyze historical
context to better
understand the world in which the
person lived. It also helps readers
understand the relationships between
people, events and ideas - as
well as the challenges - particluar to a
specific place and time.

• 2) What obstacles did Rachel face going to school?
• 3) How did Rachel's mother affect her learning?
• 4) What was Rachel's relationship to animals?
• 5) What are some ways Rachel found out about the
world around her?
