southern whites, northern blue-collar

welfare of the children and the poor,
elderly, sick, disabled, and

• Escapism-movies were a form of escape,
people sought relief from concerns
• Federal Art Project-WPA created funding
for the arts. Gave jobs opportunities to
artists
