The London Eye is an enormous Ferris wheel that was
originally built for the year 2000. It is located beside the
Thames river in London, England.
The London Eye is a colossal structure. It is made out of steel and glass which
gives it a large mass. This is important so it does not lift off the ground while a storm is
happening. The whole structure weighs 2100 tonnes and most of that weight is steel. It
is an enormous structure because it is 135 meters tall and you can see 40 kilometers in
each direction from the top of it. The people ride in big capsules that weigh 10 tons
each. There are 32 capsules. They are made out of glass which provides a great view. It
can hold 800 people in all the capsules all together. If it were to be unravelled it would
be taller than the UK’s tallest building because of its large circumference. It is the fourth
tallest structure in London. Each capsule fits twenty five people. It is designed to not
move fast for the viewing purpose and so they don’t have to stop it for people to get
off. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in London. The structure is a frame because the
structure is mostly made out of bars of steel . It is not a solid or shell because it is not in
a dome shaped and you can see through it.
The structure is a frame because the structure is mostly made out of bars of
steel . It is not a solid or shell because it is not in a dome shaped and you can see
through it. The structure is a dead and dynamic load. I think the structural features are
unique because the capsules where the people stand are more luxurious and less scary
than a normal Ferris wheel. I think they did this so people would not think of it as a
scary ride that makes some people sick. I think a pro for this structure is that is gives
pride to London. I think this design is effective because it is massive and built to stay in
the ground and it is not extremely narrow so it has balance. I think their choice of
materials was the best for this structure because like other Ferris wheels they used steel
but they made the capsules out of glass which makes the look of it more elegant.
The London eye is one of the world’s biggest attractions. It is a great and smart
way to make London more recognized. Its purpose is to be a place to view the city of
London, to be a relaxing ride and to make London famous for something. It was also
first called the millennium wheel because it was built for the year 2000. It is also a
symbol for modern Britain. From the top of the ride you can see Big Ben, the parliament
building and a whole bunch of exciting sites of London. A positive side effect is the
structure brings tourists into London and makes a lot of money. This employs a lot of
people. It also lets the stores near it have customers.
The downside of this structure is that it takes up a lot of space in the popular
area of the Thames River. Another side effect is if it falls down, there is a chance of
many things being ruined because of its mass and how tall it is. If it falls over and
destroys things, the government will have to pay to recreate everything, which will
make an economical problem. This would also effect the environment because of all the
trash being left behind from the structure falling or animals’ homes being destroyed.
An animal’s home could be destroyed by litter from this structure going into the river
where fish live. When people hear about the London Eye they think of London which is
what the government wanted when they built this structure. That is the purpose of the
London Eye.
