People discovered that young wolf cubs
could be trained
They were used for hunting, guarding and
herding.
Evidence exists that some were even pets.

As people evolved from nomadic
hunters to settled farmers about 8,000
years ago, animals changed too
 Working dogs were valued
 Cats became accepted as pets
because the ate mice
 Birds of prey were used in hunting
 Small animals became pets starting with
the Pharaohs of Egypt, Chinese
Emperors, Greek and Roman nobility.

In medieval Europe, pet keeping was
popular among the aristocracy and
senior church clergy
 Lap dogs were fashionable with ladies
 Male nobles preferred hunting dogs and
falcons
 Dog breeding spread throughout Europe
as different types of hounds were
developed for hunting specific animals

Pet keeping wasn’t generally accepted
until the end of the 17th century
 It wasn’t common with the middle class
until the late 18th century
 One of the first competitive dog shows
took place in Britain in 1859 for the
Pointer and Setter breeds
 Pets were not considered appropriate
for lower class people


