What is PODD?
• A method of teaching language through aided
symbols
• Visual representation.
• Helps in two way communication.
• Communication happens all the time.
• Communication is NOT just an activity.
• PODD IS A VOICE AND NOT A TASK.
• Puts the intent of the message first
Do’s of PODD
• Receptive input – model all the time
– Communication happens all the time
– model, pause, provide opportunities for
communication
• Acknowledge that communication is a priority
• Make something out of your mistakes and the
child’s mistakes too
• Have to use it to get familiar with it
Don’ts of PODD
• Do not expect anything in return
• Hold the hand and point i.e., force the child
• Jump to the activity pages.
Different type of PODD books in the
classrooms
• One icon per page book – visually impaired
students
• Nine icons per page
• Twelve icons per page
• Twenty icons per page
• Reduced size twelve and twenty icons per
page
– Very easy to carry around for staff
– Important to focus on what is good for the child
Why do we need different books?
• Each book is designed for expressing an
expanded range of communicative functions
typically seen in expressive communication for
specific age range.
• Size of the icons
– Suits the child’s range of access
– Visual skills
– Fit into daily environment to communicate
How do we start?
• Start using the first two pages – quick words
– Lots can be said with the first two pages
• Once comfortable, select one pragmatic
branch and model it
Difference between ‘more to say’ and
‘I have something to say’
• I have something to say
– To get the student’s attention
– To initiate communication
• More to say – only way to get the pragmatic branches
• Steps to get to pragmatic branches
– I have something to say
– More to say
– Pragmatic branches
• To get to quick words
– I have something to say
– The first two pages are quick words
Difference between ‘oops’ and ‘uh-oh’
• Oops
– Use it if you are on the wrong page
• Uh-oh
– If something happens within the natural context
Brainstorm
• Feedback from the group
• Quick words
• Pragmatic branches
