Data Mover Failover Upon completion of this module, you should be able to: • Data Mover Failover • Test Data Mover Failover and Failback Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 1 Data Mover Failover Lesson 1: Data Mover Failover During this lesson the following topics are covered: • The failover process and policies • Standby Data Movers • Planning and Configuring Data Mover failover Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 2 Failover Process • Primary Data Mover (DM) fails • Designated Standby Data Mover is activated as a spare Requires identical network configuration Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 3 Data Mover failure detection • Failover occurs under any of these conditions Data Mover panic: A hardware or software faults Data Mover hang: A condition that leads to both internal down Failover failure: Failure during a failover operation. Spontaneous Data Mover reset • Failover does not occur under these conditions Manually restarting a Data Mover Removing a Data Mover its slot Network Failure Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. Data Mover Failover 4 How Data Mover Failover Works • Normal operations Primary Data Mover Control Station constantly Standby Data Mover Monitor monitors all Data Movers (DM) • When Primary DM fails Control Station Control Station instructs Standby to take over Standby resumes entire identity and all production services Original Primary goes into failed state • After problem is resolved Administrator manually initiates restoration of original Primary FAILED Primary Data Mover “Go!” Control Station Primary Data Mover Restore Standby Data Mover Monitor Control Station Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. Data Mover Failover 5 Standby Data Mover • Hot-spare for Primary Data Movers • Can act as a spare for up to 7 primaries (depending on model) Recommended ratio is at least one Standby for three primaries • For the highest availability, use 1:1 ratio • On a two Data Mover VNX, server_3 is pre-configured as a Standby for server_2 • VNX OE software is the same for all hardware platforms Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. Data Mover Failover 6 Failover Policies • Pre-determined action • Invoked by the Control Station when it detects a failover • condition Policy types Auto Retry Manual Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 7 Planning for Data Mover Failover • Determine Primary and Standby Data Movers Ensure Primaries and Standbys have the same network hardware components Standbys are free of any configurations • Switch ports of the Standby Data Movers are assigned to the same VLANs as the Primary • Ethernet Jumbo frame configuration related to Primary Data Mover ports are in place for the Standby Data Mover • Network configuration must be identical Speed/Duplex LACP / Link aggregation Fail Safe Networking (FSN) Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. Select System > Hardware 2. 3. 4. 5. > Data Movers Select the Data Mover, and click Properties. Set Standby Movers to server_3 Failover Policy, auto Click Apply Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 10 Data Mover Failover Lesson 2: Testing Data Mover Failover and Failback During this lesson the following topics are covered: • Testing Data Mover failover • Restoring a Data Mover • Deleting a Data Mover failover relationship Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 11 Data Mover Failover Testing Considerations • Test Data Mover failover periodically/regularly (e.g. Quarterly) • Perform test at low/no impact times • When testing, validate the following Standby assumes the identity of Primary VLAN membership and LACP configuration User access to: File systems Shares Home directories Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 12 Testing Data Mover Failover • Run the following CLI Command to manually activate the Standby Data Mover server_standby <primary_DM> –activate mover Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 14 Deleting a Failover Relationship • To delete Standby relationship: Hardware → Data Movers > Server_x → uncheck field Standby Movers Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. • To change Data Mover from Standby to Primary: Hardware → Data Movers → server_x → select Role: Primary Data Mover Failover 15 Data Mover Failover Lesson 2: Summary During this lesson the following topics were covered: • Testing Data Mover failover • Restoring a Data Mover • Deleting a Data Mover failover relationship Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation. All Rights Reserved. Data Mover Failover 16 Summary Key points covered in this module: • Successful Data Mover failover requires careful planning of network switch and port configurations • Test plans should include validating access to VNX resources: File systems Shares Home directories Copyright © 2014 EMC Corporation.
