Biography
Kjell Härenstam is professor emeritus in Pedagogy of Religious Education at Karlstad University, and has been working
many years with Teacher Training. He came to Karlstad 1974 and has together with his colleagues developed Science
of Religion at that university from a start with only few courses in the Teacher Training Programme to the Doctoral
Programme of today. His main research interest has been to develop understanding for non-Christian religions, as Islam
and Buddhism, in the Teaching of Religion in ordinary Swedish schools. The object of research is mainly textbooks in
Religion.
He has worked in international projects in this domain and been a member of international networks engaged in this sort
of research, as f. ex. EAWRE (European Association for World Religions in Education). He has also been engaged in
Karlstad University Exchange Programme with Banare´s Hindu University and schools in Varanasi and Dharamsala,
India.
He has been teaching mainly within Teacher Training but also in the Doctoral Programme.
